Charlestown (now called Charles Town) was founded by Charles Washington and officially established by the Virginia General Assembly in 1787. Jefferson County, for which Charlestown holds the county seat, was formed shortly after in 1801. In the fall of 1859, in a town less than 10 miles from Charles Town, abolitionist John Brown spearheaded the famous raid of the federal arsenal in Harpers Ferry. After his capture, Brown was tried in the Jefferson County Courthouse and sentenced to be hanged on December 2nd of that year. The American Civil War broke out shortly after Brown’s execution. During the first half of the war, the occupation of Charles Town changed hands many times, from Confederate troops to Union and back again. After the war, Charles Town began rebuilding itself with a remodeled courthouse and brand new jail, as well as the erection of the Gibson-Todd House in 1891. The town continued developing well into the twentieth century with the introduction of the Charles Town Race Track that eventually became the Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races, and the opening of a new hospital that is now known as the Jefferson Medical Center.
